Marine Corps Life Insurance

As a member of the United States Marine Corps, you’re eligible to receive life insurance benefits through the government’s Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program. You will be automatically enrolled in this program by your service branch at the onset of your military career. Marines also have the option to cover spouses and dependents through the Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) program.

These guaranteed acceptance group term policies are excellent introductory options for Marines and their families, but they rarely provide enough coverage to meet all the needs of a Marine Corps family since they are one-size-fits-all. These plans do not take into account you and your family members’ individual needs and unique circumstances. Factors like age, income and health history also need to be considered when determining the type of life insurance policy you want and the amount of coverage you need.

Common Questions

Through Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI), Marine Corps servicemembers can purchase life insurance coverage in increments of $50,000 up to the $400,000 maximum. You also have the option to purchase coverage for your family through Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) which offers a term life insurance benefit of up to $100,000 for a spouse and $10,000 for dependent children. Unfortunately, FSGLI policies do not provide enough coverage to meet the needs of many Marine Corps families.

Armed Forces Mutual offers a variety of Marine Corps life insurance policies suited to meet the needs of individuals and families through each stage of military life. Visit our Life Insurance page for more information about our policies.

Veterans and military retirees do not automatically receive life insurance benefits. However, you may be eligible to purchase Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) when leaving the military as long as you meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Had SGLI while you were in the military and you’re within 1 year and 120 days of being released from an active-duty period of 31 or more days

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of assignment to the Reserves or National Guard

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of retiring or being released from the Reserves or National Guard

  • Had part-time SGLI as a member of the National Guard or Reserves, and you suffered an injury or disability while on duty that disqualifies you for standard premium insurance rates

  • Are within 1 year and 120 days of being put on the Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL)

VGLI is guaranteed acceptance group life insurance, however, rates vary depending on your age and the amount of coverage you want. Most transitioning servicemembers find VGLI to be a very expensive option for Veterans and retirees unless you are already suffering from an adverse health history. Additionally, the cost of coverage increases every 5 years, which means VGLI premiums can quickly become unaffordable.

Armed Forces Mutual offers a variety of Marine Corps life insurance policies suited to meet any Veteran’s needs. Call 800-522-5221 for more information or to get a quote today.
